Arpeggio Lab: Jazz Arpeggios and Fretboard Practice
An arpeggio presents chord tones one note at a time. Arpeggio Lab connects triads, seventh arpeggios, inversions and position studies to tablature and a metronome, then lets you load supported chords from your own chart.
Core idea
Hear the chord one note at a time
The four notes of Cmaj7 — C, E, G and B — remain the chord tones whether they are played together or in sequence. Practising their order, location and resolution provides a clear foundation for outlining that harmony in a phrase.
What arpeggios add to scale practice
A seven-note scale can contain three or four notes from the current chord plus extensions and passing material. An arpeggio isolates the notes that spell the chord, making its root, quality and seventh easier to hear against the progression.
Scales and arpeggios therefore answer different questions. The scale describes a wider note collection; the arpeggio identifies the harmonic targets inside it. A useful improvisation exercise combines both: land on a chord tone at the change, then connect it with nearby scale or chromatic notes. See Using Chord Tones in Guitar Solos.
Triads first, then sevenths
Start with a three-note triad: root, third and fifth. The current triad modes cover major, minor, diminished and augmented qualities. The seventh-arpeggio mode adds maj7, m7, dominant 7, m7♭5 and symmetrical dim7 structures.
Select one mode at a time. Each diagram labels note names, harmonic degrees and suggested fingers, so you can identify the third and seventh rather than memorising dots without their function.
Inversions: the same notes, new starting point
An inversion keeps the same pitch classes but places another chord tone first. A Cmaj7 arpeggio beginning on E is a first inversion; on G, a second inversion; on B, a third inversion. This lets you start from a nearby note instead of returning to the root for every chord.
Arpeggio Lab presents triad inversions on adjacent three-string groups and seventh inversions on adjacent four-string groups. Compare them in one key, then test which voice lies closest to the next chord in your progression.
Positions across the neck
The dedicated position mode currently provides two triad studies — a wider and a compact layout — rooted on the low E, A or D string. They occupy four to six frets and use no open-string root: if a root would fall at the nut, the study moves up an octave.
The suggested fingering follows a one-finger-per-fret rule based on the lowest fret actually used by the shape. A skipped fret therefore skips a finger. This is different from assigning fingers merely by the order of the notes.
The rhythmic workout
The four-bar workout uses a click and highlights the current tablature step while you play. Each bar is filled according to the selected subdivision: quarter notes, eighths, triplets or sixteenths, with quintuplets and sextuplets available at the advanced level. Alternate, gypsy rest-stroke and sweep-picking indications are separate options.
The application produces the metronome click, not an audio performance of the pitched arpeggio. Start at a tempo where the notes and string changes remain even; the interface suggests 60 BPM in eighth notes as a reference before increasing by small steps.
Approaches, enclosures and practice formulas
From intermediate level, the lab can place a chromatic approach below or above the next chord tone. At advanced level, an enclosure surrounds the target from above and below. The rhythmic rule remains explicit: the chord tone lands on the beat and the approach notes lead into the following target from the offbeat.
Additional exercises apply degree formulas to harmonised major, harmonic-minor and melodic-minor scales. Advanced chart-phrasing options include anticipation of the next chord, selected outside movement and enclosures whose upper note comes from a chosen scale or mode. These are structured exercises, not automatic solo generation.
Following your own chord chart
Load or enter a progression and the lab exposes up to eight distinct, supported chords as selectable chips. Conservative mappings connect extended dominant, minor or major symbols to the available triad or seventh family; unsupported sus, power or minor-major qualities are not forced into an inaccurate seventh-arpeggio reading.
Select each chord, compare the nearest notes and build a four-bar task around the change. This supports guide-tone practice and a II-V-I without claiming that every chord symbol has a single mandatory fingering.
Current Fingering Scope and Checks
The note formulas are generated by chord quality, while fingerings are suggested separately. Reference shapes and regression cases are locked in the engine, including the low Gmaj7 position and Nicolas Alteirac’s one-finger-per-fret rule. Other generated fingerings should still be checked guitar in hand, especially before assigning them to a student.
Power chords are handled separately: G5, for example, contains only root and fifth, so it is displayed as a mobile 1–5–1 study rather than labelled as a seventh arpeggio. Mobile scale and arpeggio zones also avoid presenting a duplicate open-string position as Position 1.
