Chord Substitutions on Guitar, Explained

A substitution is not a trick or a wrong note you got away with. It is a chord that does the same job as the one written, while sounding different — and once you understand why they work, you stop memorising lists and start hearing options in any progression you play.

Same job, different colour

Two chords can be swapped when they share enough notes and serve the same function — building tension, or providing rest. Everything below is one of those two ideas applied in a different direction.

Why substitution works at all

Harmony is not a set of chords, it is a set of functions. In any key some chords mean “we are home”, others mean “we are leaving”, and one means “we are coming back right now”. Your ear tracks the function far more than the exact chord.

So if another chord contains most of the same notes and delivers the same message, you can put it in and the music still makes sense. It just wears a different colour.

The test Count the shared notes, then ask what the chord is doing. Three shared notes and the same function is a substitution. One shared note and a different function is a mistake.

1. Relative substitution

The gentlest one, and the place to start. Chords a third apart in the same key share three of their four notes.

Cmaj7 =  C  E  G  B
Am7   =  A  C  E  G      shares C, E, G
Em7   =  E  G  B  D      shares E, G, B

So in the key of C, Am7 and Em7 can both stand in for Cmaj7. A plain | C | C | F | G | becomes | C | Am7 | F | G | and instantly has movement without changing the harmony’s meaning at all.

This works in the other direction too, and it is the cheapest way to make a repetitive four-bar loop breathe. It is also completely safe for a beginner: no foreign notes are introduced.

2. The tritone substitution

The famous one, and the one people misuse. Replace a dominant seventh with another dominant seventh a tritone (three tones / six frets) away.

G7   =  G  B  D  F
D♭7  =  D♭ F  A♭ C♭        C♭ is the same pitch as B

Look at what they share: B and F. That tritone is the entire engine of a dominant chord — the unstable interval that wants to resolve. Both chords contain it, so both point at C. They are, functionally, the same chord wearing different roots.

The payoff is in the bass. | Dm7 | G7 | Cmaj7 | has a root moving D → G → C. Substitute and you get | Dm7 | D♭7 | Cmaj7 |, a root moving D → D♭ → C: a chromatic slide downward. That descending bass is the sound of a thousand jazz turnarounds.

Where it fails The tritone sub only makes sense on a dominant chord that is genuinely resolving. Applied to a static vamp or a chord that goes nowhere, it just sounds out of tune. It needs the resolution to justify it.

3. Secondary dominants

Not really a substitution — an intensification. Any chord in the key can be preceded by its own dominant, borrowed from outside the key.

In C major the ii chord is Dm7. The dominant of D is A7. So:

The Am7 becomes A7 — one note changes, C to C♯ — and suddenly bar one is pulling into bar two instead of merely preceding it. Every chord gets this treatment: E7 pulls to Am, D7 pulls to G, C7 pulls to F.

This is the single most useful substitution in blues, rock and gypsy jazz, because it adds drive without any jazz vocabulary at all.

4. Turning a V into a ii-V

If a bar holds a dominant chord for four beats, you can nearly always split it and put the related minor seventh in front:

| G7      | Cmaj7 |    ->    | Dm7  G7 | Cmaj7 |

You have not changed the harmony — you have prepared it. The approach is smoother and the bar has motion. Do this to a plain blues and it starts to sound like a jazz blues. The mechanics of that cadence are in what is a ii-V-I progression on guitar.

5. Diminished passing chords

A diminished seventh chord makes an excellent piece of glue between two chords a whole tone apart:

| C  C#dim7 | Dm7 |

The C♯dim7 belongs to neither chord — it exists purely to walk the bass chromatically from C to D. Because a dim7 is symmetrical (it repeats identically every three frets), the shape is easy to place anywhere on the neck.

Use it as a passing chord on a weak beat. Park on it and it sounds like a mistake; pass through it and it sounds like an arranger wrote it.

The one rule that matters

Here is what separates reharmonisation from noise: a substitution has to resolve. If the chord you put in does not lead somewhere the ear accepts, no amount of theory rescues it.

Three practical guards:

Follow the guide tones

Track the thirds and sevenths through the change. If they still move by a semitone or stay put, the substitution is working. See guide tones.

Tell the bass player

A tritone sub against a bassist playing the written root is a car crash. Substitutions are an arrangement decision, not a private one.

Serve the tune

If a folk song is beautiful with three chords, reharmonising it is vandalism with a diploma. Restraint is a skill.

On guitar all of this is easier than it sounds, because shell voicings — root, third and seventh only — already contain exactly the notes that decide a substitution. Drop the fifth, keep the guide tones, and swapping G7 for D♭7 is a one-finger move.
